We have very bad water here and have to have water delivered for our pond.

UPDATE

Now we haul the water ourselves. It's a lot cheaper but a lot---- of work.

Algae was a terrible problem until we put up a cover over the top of the pond. With shade most of the day the problem was cut way down.
Recently we made a pond in our backyard. (See top photo) It has been a learning experience since we didn't know anything about building or maintaining a pond. It's been a lot of fun finding fish and plants for it. We are changing it just about every week. We had about 30 little fish hatch and had to put in another pond in the front yard to handle the overflow. In the big pond we have 14 goldfish, each about 6" to 9" long. In the smaller one in the front we have about 25 to 30 fish averaging 2" long, some are longer, some are smaller. The largest is about 4".

We started off with very small plants and have to repot them every time we turn around. I have been giving plants away so I won't have to throw them out. The parrot feather plants at the moment are taking over the top section of the pond as you can see. (See photo left below) We have already taken out some to put in the front pond but now it's worse than ever. The plant on the right side at the top is called water celery. It is also taking over as you can see.

You can see a few of our larger fish (see below right). They seem to eat all the time. We didn't know that goldfish changed colors even after they are pretty good size. The one that is spotted with white in the middle of the picture is turning white. The white fish on the left was gold at the start of Spring and has turned completely white. A white one that you cannot see very well is starting to show patches of gold so we think he is turning gold now. I want to have a black one but everyone I have is turning gold.

At the very top of the pond there is just dirt with regular plants inside. The middle area is where the parrot feather plants and the water celery are located. In about two months the top part of the pond has filled completely up. When we first put in the plants you could see almost all of the water, now you can see none except where it goes over the waterfall. If you didn't know about the waterfall you wouldn't even know it was there.
This shows the main part of our pond. We have hardy water lilies and iris's. They came through last winter fairly well. I had some tropical plants that did not make it.
